English 5

Last Week in November

In our only lesson this week we talked about stress and about our work-life balance (pages 68 and 69) and started working on the topic quantifiers (pages 138 and 139). We did the corresponding exercises and practised talking to our classmates. As homework for Monday, please do the exercise on this handout

Last week we finished File 4C (pages 62 to 67) and revised the new-acquired vocabulary and structures. As homework for Wednesday 27th, please write a description of you own house or flat following the guidelines you can find on page 65 and remember to use the vocabulary we've been learning!

November 10th-12th

This week we have been talking about old friends and about how and why to get in touch with old school mates or ex-boy/girlfriends (pages 60 and 61). In oder to do so we have learnt to express past habits using the structure used to + infinitive (pages 136 and 137). We did some extra exercises (handout here) and we'll keep practising next week, don't worry!
There is no homework for next week, lucky you! :-)

First week in November

Last week we've revised the use of first and second conditional sentences by doing several written and speaking exercises, like the ones in these handouts (first and second). On the other hand, we revised the old vocabulary regarding houses that we already knew and also learnt some new words (page 151). We listened to the song Our house by Madness:

If you want to practice the lyrics, here you have a little help:

As homework for next week, please write a short essay about "What would you do if...?" using second conditional sentences. Have a great weekend!

Last Week in October 2014

These first days we've been introducing ourselves and getting to know each other. We've also practiced the first and second conditionals by doing various activities and exercises. Here you can find the handout we did in class. I you cannot access it, please tell me about it in class next week.
Have a lovely weekend! :-)

  End of academic year 2013/2014

Final Test

On Wednesday we took our final test. I'm sure you've all done great! We'll check it together next Monday. For those of you who couldn't be in class, here you have the test. Try to do it without any help, and then check the key and give yourself a mark! You also have it all in our Dropbox folder.

This past week we've also been working on your beloved prepositions in/at/on. Here you can access the handout we worked with in class and also the key to the exercises (there is also a copy in our Dropbox folder).

See you all on Monday 12, our last day together!

Just about to finish...

We only have a couple of weeks ahead of us to finish our English course! These past days we have been practising phrasal verbs and revising modals.

There are a lot of web pages where you can do tons of exercises:
Homework for Monday: grammar handout on modal verbs (must/can't/might), available here and in our Dropbox folder. Also remember to revise what we have learnt this year, and bring in any questions or doubts you might have so that we can discuss them in class before the final test. This PowerPointPresentation might be of help :-)

Remember! We'll be taking our final test on Wednesday 7!

Happy Easter!

Happy holidays to all of you! I hope you get many presents from the Easter bunny :-)
In our last week before our spring break we worked on phrasal verbs. As homework please do the exercises on the handout I gave out in class (availabe in our Dropbox folder and also here) and also try to write a short essay about your daily routine using as many phrasal verbs as you can come up with.

Remember! We'll be back at school on Wednesday 23rd, Shakespeare's day! You can have a laugh being insulted by the very Mr. William Shakespeare if you click on this link. Enjoy! ;-)

April Fool's Day

We only have now one week ahead of us before going on holiday! These past days we have been revising question tags and indirect questions and we've also had a first look at phrasal verbs (pages 108, 109, 142, 143 and 155). We'll do plenty of practice with that, so don't worry!

On Wednesday this week we took a look at one of the most famous April Fool's pranks of all times, the spaguetti crop video by the BBC. Here you have it again, just to have a laugh :-)

I also recommend you to listen to this BBC Learning English interview, which you can also read with the script here

Homework for Monday: phrasal verb exercises on the grammar handout (available here and in our Dropbox folder). Have a great weekend! :-)

A three-lesson week

This week we had three lessons instead of just two, so we had the chance of practicing question tags one more day :-) You can find the handout we worked with in class in our Dropbox folder and here

These days we've been talking about Jack the Ripper and we learnt that up to now nobody has been able to discover who he really was. The crime writer Patricia Cornwell tried to find out and that's what she discovered:

If you want to learn more about this investigation, just surf the web for the rest of this documentary. Enjoy! :-)

By the way, no homework for Monday 24th, lucky you!

It's March already!

On Monday the 10th we took a test on File 6. You can access the test, the audio tracks and the key to the exercises in our Dropbox folder and also here if you are a gmail user. You all did very well, congratulations! :-)

There is no homework for next week, enjoy your weekend!

Last Week in February

Last week we started working on File 7A and did a quite in-depth revision of first and second conditional sentences. If you want to do a bit more practice on them, check out the following links:
After revising those two types we started working on the third conditional (pages 101, 142 and 143). We'll keep working on them next week, no worries! :-)
Homework for Monday 3rd: exercises a and c on page 143 (part 7A, top of the page).
Have a sunny weekend despite the rain!

February 17th-19th

In the last couple of weeks we have finished File 6 and we have also done one last practice and revision of what we now know with the exercises on pages 98 and 99. We did the listening exercises on page 99 and since we listened to Charles Dickens' short biography, I thought you might be interested in taking a look at this very interesting video by the BBC made on occasion of Dickens' 200th anniversary:

There is also a pretty cool game here about Dickens' London. Enjoy! :-)

On Wednesday 19th we had a quite full-of-grammar class, doing a revision of how first and second conditional sentences are built. I promised you to bring more exercises and to do more real practice on those two condicional types next week. In the meantime, you can re-read the explanations on page 136 and do the corresponding exercises on page 137.

One last thing: remember to doodle up! As you know, we'll be missing one lesson on May 14th, so please let me know when is the best day for you to make up for that one day. To do so, just click on this link and complete the chart. Remember to green-check the days you could attend. Thanks!

It's February already!

January 13th-15th

This past week we finished File 6A and did some more practice on reported speech (in questions, statements and commands) and we also learnt about complaining (pages 86-87). What we all know now is that we don't want to have any trouble with Pablo ;-) He makes a terrifying shop assistant!
We also had the time to start talking about movies and places where they were set (pages 88-89) and started working on passive senteces (pages 140-141).

Homework for Wednesday
(remember: Monday is a University holiday!): exercises on this handout (also in our Dropbox folder).

I would also recommend you to go to the movies! It's always such a nice experience spending a couple of hours there! What about The Wolf of Wall Street? I haven't watched it yet, but it's probably going to be one of this year's great releases, I guess:

Welcome back!

We are now ready to start the new year with lots of energy and eager to learn more and more, good! :-)

After that very nice time we spent together having a coffee on Wednesday 8th, we went back to class last week and did some New Year's Resolutions, like Bridget Jones did (click on the picture to watch the video):

 http://www.anyclip.com/movies/bridget-joness-diary/new-years-resolutions/

We then went back to where we had left our lessons right before Christmas and remembered how to build reported speech questions. I asked you if you remembered that and you did! We also learnt how to report commands (pages 86 and 87) and did some exercises on that (Grammar Bank and the Reported Speech handout we have in our Dropbox folder and here).

As homework for Monday, please do exercise 48.3 about reporting commands on the Murphy handout (Dropbox folder and here).

Have a great weekend! :-)

Happy New Year!

We finished our first term together and we had quite a lot of fun in our last class together! Remember: there's no homework for January, lucky you! Just stay in touch with English and do some practice everyday, even if little.
Remember to come back to class on Wednesday, January 8th! Regular classes start at the Casa de las Lenguas the following week, but we have decided to start before to make up for one missing day. Merry Christmas to all of you and a very happy New Year! :-)

Happy December!

This fisrt week in December we started working on File 6 and revised and learnt new words related to shopping and shopping habits (pages 84, 85 and 153). We also learnt how to tell people what others had previously told us (reported speech). We worked with two different grammar handouts, you can find both of them in our Dropbox folder and also here (if you can't open the link, just tell me and I'll invite you).

Next week we'll be having our last class before Christmas on Wednesday! Homework is: exercises 1 and 2 on reported speech on page 97 on this handout.

Christmas time is almost there and I just can't think of Christmas without listening to this beautiful song by The Pogues:

November 27th

In our only lesson this week, we checked together the test on File 5 we had taken last week. Congratulations, you all did very well! If you want to go through the test again or to repeat the listening exercises, remember you can find all of it in our Dropbox folder and also by clicking on this link.

As homework for Monday next week, remember to write your CV and a covering letter applying either for a real job or for one of the vacancies at the Olympic Committee (page 81). Revise also the grammar bank (pages 140 and 141) on reported speech and do the two first exercises on this handout (also available at Dropbox).

Have a lovely weekend! :-)

This week we just finished working on File 5C and on Wednesday we took an easy and small test, I'm sure you all did perfectly well! :-)

We also got to know Allie, Mark, Ben, Jacques and the pop star Scarlett (pages 64 and 80), who is a really spoilt American child. Remember to do the revision exercises on pages 82 and 83 if you haven't done them yet.If you want to do the listening exercises on page 83, look for the audio tracks 49 and 50 in our Dropbox folder, it's a great exercise!Check also for extra exercises on the Workbook (access via our Dropbox folder: pages 44 to 53 are the ones corresponding to File 5).
Remember: no class on Monday! It's a university holiday! :-) So see you all on Wednesday 27th!Since last week we were talking about pretending and the TV contest The Pretenders, I'd like to share with you now this very nice song by Chrissie Hynde's band The Pretenders, I'm sure you've heard it plenty of times!

Here you have the same song played live and with lyrics:

Our last week together!

This week we finished File 7, did the revision exercises on pages 114 and 115 and took a look at everything we have learnt this year using this PowerPointPresentation

Remember! There is no class on Tuesday (Martes de Campo) and we'll take our final test on Thursday

Enjoy your weekend! :-D

2th - 9th of May

This week we've been working on File 7C and on your beloved phrasal verbs ;-) We did the exercises on the Grammar Bank (pages 142-143), Vocabulary Bank (page 155) and we played this phrasal verb race. We also did some more exercises that you can also practice at home using this handout.

On Thursday we started talking about the couple (page 111) who lived without electricity for 37 years, incredible, isn't it!? But we'll go back to this topic next week and Lola will have to tell us about her experience in Bolivia ;-)

Homework for Tuesday: write about your daily routine using as many phrasal verbs as possible! (You can use as an example this handout here).
Have a wonderful weekend! :-D

30th of April - 2nd of May

Unfortunately I was off sick on Tuesday this week, but luckily my colleague Goretti gave me a hand and worked with you :-)
This week we finished working with question tags and indirect questions. Here you have the promised exercises and the promised keys to the exercises:
We finished File 7B and started File 7C chatting about our TV/Internet habits. We also had time to start working on phrasal verbs! You love them don't you!!? ;-) We did the corresponding exercises on the Grammar Bank section (please read on page 142 section 7B very carefully) and as homework for next week you can work on this handout you already have. If you want to practice a bit more, check this and this other online exercises. I'm sure you know much more phrasal verbs than you think! :-)
On Thursday we talked about soap operas (if you click on this link you'll find a listening exercise!) and I promised I'd show you something. Well, the most famous soap operas in the U.K. are, by far, Coronation Street and EastEnders. Coronation Street is so famous that even Prince Charles accepted to do a cameo in one of its episodes. Watch! (big moment: from minute 6 on): [and let's see how well you understand Mancunian accent!)

Lucky you - ther's no homework for Tuesday!

First week after Easter

March 21st

On Thursday we revised your excellent tests and started working on File 7 (apages 100 and 101). We talked about good luck, bad luck and superstitions and we compared the First and Second Conditional with the Third Conditional. On Tuesday next week we are going to take a small test on File 6, I'm sure you'll all do great! If you want to revise, click on this link. For vocabulary exercises, click here. Have a great weekend! :-)

First week in March

This week we've had a weird week - On Tuesday I was off sick (stomach flue again, it's terrible!) and you worked with my fellow teacher Goretti: you checked your homework (Grammar Bank, page 141) and practiced relative clauses and then you also worked on the text and listening exercise on page 94. On Thursday I was back on and we finished working with the text on page 94, continued working on noun formation on page 95, did some extra practice on relative clauses using this handout and did a lot of talking with the communicative activity on pages 118 and 121.

And this is the link I told you about to practice some pronunciation (plurals, specific sentences, etc.): Text to speech. Enjoy! :-)
If I had to choose an icon of the 20th century, I would absolutely choose Mr. Mandela, wouldn't you? Watch this short biography, it's really nicely spoken and easily understandable! :-)

Last week in February

This last week in February we've been revising cinema vocabulary, passive sentences and doing some communicative activities.
Regarding the cinema vocabulary, I promised you to tell you the right answers to the Movie Quotation Quiz. Well, here they are!
On Thursday we also tried to solve the mistery of some movies and their titles in Spanish. Here you have the handout
About passive exercises, we checked the ones you had done at home and now you can do some more extra practice with this handout (here is the also promised key to these exercises). Don't hesitate to ask in class about any doubts you might have!

On Thursday this week we also had the time to take a look at how to write a good film review (page 97). As homework for Thursday next week, please write a film review about a film you liked very much (it can be either a film on cinemas right now or an old movie, you choose!). If you want some extra help, visit this link and make the most of it! ;-)
And we started working on File 6C (pages 92 and 93) and on relative clauses (page 140). Don't worry, we'll work on that next week. Homework for Tuesday next week: exercises a and b on page 141 (Grammar Bank, 6C).

As a weekend present, here you have a great webpage, with tons of lovely short films!

CINEMA WEEK

This week we've been working on cinema vocabulary and on passive sentences
We've worked on pages 88 to 91, 140 ,141 and 154. We've also worked with these handouts: an explanation of passive sentences and extra exercises we've already checked in class
As homework for next week, please do the exercises on this other handout. If you have any trouble with any sentence, just don't worry, we'll check them all together in class next Tuesday.
If you need some extra practice, try these other online exercises: 1 and 2.
Regarding the cinema vocabulary, we worked with these handouts: a basic vocabulary list (check also page 154), a list of famous film lines (quotations) and I've also prepared this funny exercise for your brilliant brains: a handout with the English and the translated Spanish titles. Let's see how many you get right! ;-)
You can also try these two online exercises
And since we're getting close to the next Oscar's ceremony, it might be a good idea to watch some of the nominated films, such as Argo, Zero Dark Thirty,

OTHER/ANOTHER

Last week we also took a look at the differences between other and another. Remember, the key is: another = an + other, which means that, as an adjective, it can only be used with singular countable nouns.

Here you have more explanations and additional exercises, I hope you find them useful:

January 14th

In our only lesson this week we started File 6B and talked about movies, film locations and the Passive voice (pages 88, 89, 140 and 141). I gave out this handout with a brief explanation of Passive formation and we practiced with the exercises on page 141.
Homework for next week: exercise b from page 141 (part 6B) and exercise a from this other handout.
As we are talking about movies, I think it's a good moment to take a look at this year's BAFTA awards. If you click on the picture you'll be able to watch George Clooney's acceptance speech:

We'll check it together on Wednesday, our last day :-(

May 21st - 24th
This week we've finished our last lesson and we've revised all the grammar and vocabulary items we've learnt throughout the year. We used this Power Point presentation and did some extra exercises on those topics you felt less comfortable with.

Have a very nice weekend and get ready for our last week together :-(

May 14th - 17th
This week we've been working on indirect questions (remember the "Scariest tour of London" activity) and we also began working with some beautiful phrasal verbs. Don't hate them, they are just lovely! :-)

Here you have a very complete list that you can use to check whenever you hesitate or you can even read a page every day, this would be an excellent practice! You can also browse the page and do some exercises or play some games.

And here is the link to one of the most commonly used books on phrasal verbs. You can also take a quick look to a different page every day. Come on, it's fun! :-)

English Phrasal Verbs in Use

Remember to check for mistakes before giving it in! :-) If you don't know which film to choose, here you can get some ideas. Or else you can always check the world-famous International Movie Database.

I hope you all have a wonderful time! :-) And remember to send a postcard if you travel anywhere!
